Rivers Edge Golf Club has been gearing up for a very exciting event Labor Day Weekend. There is a group of golfers that will be teeing it up on September 3rd for a very patriotic cause. There are 16 Myrtle Beach area PGA Professionals and an amateur that will be taking on an incredible task to raise money for an incredible organization. This group is headed up by PGA Head Professional, Jimmy Biggs. Since his golf course is closed for remodeling and renovation he has had some extra time to organize his troops and lead them in the fundraising effort for the Folds of Honor Foundation. Labor Day weekend is a patriotic weekend for all Americans. It means something more to Jimmy and his team.
Since 2007, the Folds of Honor has carried forth this singular, noble mission. To provide educational scholarships to spouses and children of America’s fallen and disabled service-members. It was started by Major Dan Rooney, an F-16 fighter pilot in the Oklahoma Air National Guard. He was returning home from his second tour of duty in Iraq when he witnessed the the remains of Corporal Brock Bucklin being brought home to his family. The pilot made the announcement asking all passengers to respectfully remain seated while his casket deboarded. But most of the people ignored the request and that is when Major Rooney decided he needed to do something.
Major Rooney committed to spend his life changing the future of America’s grieving spouses and children. In 2007, he formed the Folds of Honor Foundation; a 501C-3 nonprofit organization dedicated to providing educational scholarships to the families of these heroic Americans. This organization found a link to the game of golf through Major Rooney’s love and passion for golf. Now it has become a national event and it has found a great home in the heart of Jimmy Biggs and his troops.
The Myrtle Beach PGA Patriots (a name given to the group by Major Dan Rooney himself) started in 2014 with 10 local PGA professional raising over $12,000 for the Folds of Honor. It has really grown from there. The three year total so far for this group has reached just under $90,000. This is something that Jimmy has really taken to heart and is the “Captain” of the team. He set a goal this year for the group to reach that $90,000 mark in 2017 alone. And we are trying very hard to get there with alot of help from alot of people.
Jimmy has been to the national Folds of Honor Foundation headquarters in Oklahoma and has been recognized for his efforts in leading the Myrtle Beach PGA Patriots. The 100 hole marathon that the Patriots will play in is at Rivers Edge Golf Course on Sunday, September 3rd. We will tee it up at 7am and play till we get 100 holes of golf completed as a group. None of this would be possible if not for the drive and energy of Capt. Biggs!
As the motto of the Folds of Honor says we “Honor Their Sacrifice. Educate Their Legacy.”
