Every golf course has its signature hole and Arcadian Shores Golf Club has a great one.  Not only is this tough dogleg par 4 the signature hole but it is also the number 1 handicap hole on the course.  On this edition of Tee It Up Grand Strand we are going to take a look at how to play this hole.  As always we take the amateur perspective on playing each shot and the yardage will be from the white tees.  Arcadian does offer 5 sets of tees so that players of all ages and abilities can enjoy this Rees Jones design.

Club selection off the tee is arguably the most important shot on the 13th hole.  At 367 yards there are several options players can take from the tee but placement of the ball for the second shot is much more important that distance.  Although due to the fact that the green is protected short by a lake, it is not smart to layup too far from the hole.  A hybrid or even fairway wood into the green is extremely tough to pull off.  On the other hand, too far down the fairway and around the dogleg may leave the golfer with an awkward downhill lie to a green that is well below the fairway.  So the ideal spot is just at the top of the hill in the right center of the fairway.  That will leave around 160 yards for the approach shot.

Even thought the approach shot is downhill, golfers cannot under club.  The water runs right up to the front of the green.  There is a green side bunker behind the putting surface and golfers do not want to have to stand in that bunker looking at the water and try to hit a sand shot.  Pin placement is not important.  Pull enough club and aim for the center of the green in the smart and safe play.  The green is large and receptive.  Par is a good score here.  A mistake for being too aggressive or too passive can lead to big number on the scorecard.  Take the middle of the green, make a solid two putt par and move on to the 14th tee.

Arcadian Shores is a classic golf course that has many fun and challenging holes but the 13th is a real treat to play.  It is definitely a tough hole but the layout and the challenge makes it very fun to play.  For more information or to make a tee time visit the website www.arcadianshoresgolf.com or call the golf shop at 843.449.5217.
