The International Club of Myrtle Beach has several challenging holes and the 5th hole is certainly one of those holes.  On this edition of Tee It Up Grand Strand we will take a look at this demanding par 5 and give some tips on how to play it.  Since most golfers play from the white tees we will use that tee box for the yardages and set up of the hole.  We all are amateurs anyway right?

Measuring at 508 yards it is not the length of the hole that makes No. 5 a tough hole.  It is the tee shot over water and the tightness of the fairway that provides the biggest challenge on this par 5.  The gap to shoot through off the tee out to the fairway may remind golfers of a bowling alley or hallway it will look so narrow as they stand on the tee box.  It can be very intimidating trying to find the fairway through the opening.

Once in the fairway players are still challenged with a narrow landing area further down the fairway as they look find a spot to layup and set up a good angle on the approach shot.  Longer hitters can maybe take a go at reaching the green in two shots but they better be on the right side of the fairway to have the angle into the putting surface.  For most players the smart play is to lay up down near the end of the fairway to set up a wedge shot into the green.

Trees guard the left hand side of the green and bunkers line the right side.  Even with a wedge in hand, the approach shot into No. 5 can be unnerving.  Players need to take a deep breath and putt a good swing on the wedge and aim for the center of the surface and not worry about pin location.  The putting surface is not overly large so the center will not leave too long of a putt.

If players are able to get to the green in three shots they should have a solid look at birdie.  That would be a great score on this tough golf hole.  In fact, golfers should be very happy to walk off the 5th green with a par on their score card.  The challenge of the first par 5 on the front side will give golfers a good understanding of what lies ahead as they make their way around this well laid out design tucked away in the trees in Murrells Inlet.
