Many golf courses all over the country have holes that can be seen from the road and Diamondback Golf Club at Woodland Valley is no exception. The 12th hole and 13th tee can be seen from Highway 9 just before golfers turn off the road into the entry road to the golf course. The 12th is a par 3 and the 13th is a dogleg left par 4. On this edition of Tee It Up Grand Strand we take a look at playing those two holes. They are the holes that even non-golfers talk about since they back up just about to the side of the highway. We figured we should let folks in on what these two golf holes are all about.
The 12th is a 125 yard par 3 that is very straightforward. What you see is what you get kind of hole. There is water short and left of the green which is no big deal because there is plenty of area to bail out short right or long to avoid the water. The green is large and round. It slopes from back to front a bit, making putts from the back of the green on a front pin placement a little tricky, but overall it is a nice little par 3 that most golfers should walk away from with a par on the scorecard. Make sure to wave to the cars when walking from the green back to the golf carts.
The par 4 13th hole is a whole different story. The tee box backs up to the highway and the dogleg turns to the left at almost a 90 degree angle. In fact, the second half of the fairway down to the hole cannot be seen from the tee box. At 338 yards from the middle tees it is not a long hole but accuracy and placement off the tee are critical if golfers want a chance at birdie. Long hitters can try to go over top of the trees on the corner of the dogleg, but they better clear the tops or double and triple bogey will come into play.
The green is slightly below the level of the fairway and there is some water off the right hand side of the green that does not really come into play. A good short to mid iron shot into the large green should set up a nice run at a possible birdie or at worst a two putt par. A tough but fun hole, No.13 is one of the better holes on the course.
