On this edition of Tee It Up Grand Strand we visit a golf course that has come to be known as a very fun and friendly place to play a round of golf. Crow Creek Golf Club is located in Calabash, North Carolina just a few minutes north of Myrtle Beach. PGA Head Professional, Jimmy Biggs and his staff have worked really hard at making sure that all golfers feel welcome and receive second to none customer service form the minute they step onto the property. But what really makes a golfer feel good when they get to the golf course? A good score on the first hole!
The first hole at Crow Creek is a relatively short and straightforward 330 yard par 4, but golfers cannot get lulled into a sense of false security when the read the scorecard. They will get a different felling when they walk onto the tee box and look down the fairway. There is more than enough trouble out there to make that confident feeling disappear pretty fast.
Fairway bunkers are scatted all down the right hand side of the fairway along with a smattering of trees that await to knock down wayward tee shots. There is a small pond further down the fairway along the left side,b it that only comes into play for the longer hitters (or short hitters that hit a back second shot). Grip it and rip it is probably not the best philosophy on the first tee of the day. An accurate shot is much more important than distance, which is ok since the hole is shorter. The green is surrounded, save for the run up area in front, by a handful of sand traps that will penalize wayward approach shots. The green is good sized so a solid short iron shot should leave golfers in good shape. The putting surface is wide open in the front which allows for a comfortable feeling with hitting the approach shot.
Now that we are putting we need to roll the ball with confidence. Crow Creek boasts some of the best rolling greens on the beach. Golfers can stand over the putt and put a solid stroke on it knowing that the ball will roll true to its line. An opening birdie is very possible on No.1 but golfers should certainly be able to walk away with a par and a great feeling heading into the rest of the round.
