River Oaks Golf Plantation is a fun and challenging 27 hole complex located in the heart of Myrtle Beach.  Each of the nine hole courses (Fox, Otter and Bear) have their own feel and personality that golfers find refreshing each time they play a different combination of nines.  On this edition of Tee It Up Grand Strand we are focusing on the first hole on the Fox nine.  The Fox course is locate across River Oaks Drive so golfers get to venture over a bridge that the golf carts up and over the busy road.  It is a cool and unique feature that only River Oaks has in the area.

The first hole on the Fox nine is a par 5 that plays anywhere from 385 yards for the ladies to 536 yards from the back tees.  We will look at this hole from the white (middle) tees since that is what most golfers play.  At an even 500 yards we are looking at a hole than can be played a couple ways.  The fairway off the tee is very wide open with trees along the left of the hole and some homes from the adjacent neighborhood running along the right side.  Golfers need to take advantage of the generous landing area and hit a long drive.

The second half of the fairway to the green is slightly uphill making the 500 yards seem a bit longer.  The longer hitters will have a chance to go at this very small green in two should they choose.  Most golfers need to select a club that will give them a good angle and yardage in the surface.  The fairway remains wide to about the 100 yard marker and then it narrows severely the closer it gets to the green.  We certainly recommend layup around to about the 75-100 yard mark and to the right side.  Left is protected by a few sand traps.  There is a long trap along the right side but it is more behind the green than anything. The putting surface is sloped from back to front and right to left so placing the approach shot accordingly based on the location of the pin is paramount to avoiding a touch downhill, side hill putt.  The green is very narrow in the front portion and then widen as it gets toward the back side.  Two putting on this green is a very good achievement for almost all golfers.  If golfers can start their Fox nine with a par they have done good for themselves and should feel confident about going onto the rest of their round.
