We know that everyone is going to be very excited to get out and play Arcadian Shores Golf Club now that they have re-opened after closing for more than 4 months to complete renovations. On this edition of Tee It Up Grand Strand we want to give golfers a tip on how to get their round off to a good start by giving some tips on how to play the par 5 first hole.
The first hole on the Rees Jones design is a 486 yard dog-leg left par 5 from the white tees. Remember we always give our tips from the perspective on the amateur golfer so we use the white tees as our tees of choice. The fairway is guarded by trees all the way down the right hand side as it curls to the left. Right at the corner of the dog-leg is a fairway bunker that golfers need to contend with. It can be carried with an aggressive shot but playing to the corner in the middle of the fairway is the safe play.
From the fairway golfers look straight down to the green. It is possible to reach in 2 if we cleared the bunker off the tee, but most golfers will need to hit a layup shot and play for position. The best angle to hit into the green from is the right side since there are a few bunkers short left of the putting surface. So be sure to layup to the right.
Now we are looking right up the neck of the run up area just short of the green. Take a wedge and hit either a low runner up the slope to the surface or drop it on the center of the green. Either shot should give a look at birdie.
Now we are putting on the brand new putting surface so we need to take advantage and hopefully get an opening hole birdie, but at worst we should be walking off the green with a par. Either way it is a good way to start the round at Arcadian Shores. There are some challenging holes to come on the front nine so golfers need to grab pars or birdies where they can.
